NVCA Water Safety | Update 17 Apr 2018

Flood Potential: Low
Ice Jam Potential: Low

The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority advises that the Flood Watch message issued April 15, 2018 is downgraded to a Water Safety Statement. The public and especially children are advised to stay away from all area water bodies as slippery banks and cold, fast flowing water will result in dangerous conditions.

In the range of 80-90 mm of rain, freezing rain, snow and ice fell in the watershed from Thursday through Monday. Temperatures were lower than originally forecast on Sunday night and Monday which minimized the amount of
runoff. Stream flows in the upstream parts of the watershed have peaked. However, stream flows are still elevated and will continue to be for the next several days as flow works its way downstream. Minor local flooding was reported in some areas, however no additional flooding is anticipated at this time.

There is always the potential for unsafe conditions around area streams and rivers – caution is advised. The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority continues to monitor river and stream conditions and will issue additional messages as conditions warrant. This statement will be in effect until 4:00 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2018.

For additional information, please call 705-424-1479 and select option “1” for the flood information line or check the website at: www.nvca.on.ca

2018 Fire Hydrant Maintenance

Public Notice

Fire Hydrant Flushing and Maintenance Programs

May 1 to July 31, 2018

  • Cardinal Woods Drinking Water System
  • Island Lake Drinking Water System

Users of the above noted water systems should be aware that from May 1 to July 31, 2018 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week, Orangeville Water Works Staff and contractors will be periodically inspecting and flushing fire hydrants and conducting flow tests as part of our fire hydrant maintenance program.

Due to sedimentation, the flushing may cause discolouration of the water, so please check your cold water supply before using.  If discolouration does occur, let the cold water run until it clears.  The Town expects this preventative maintenance process to have minimal impact on residents.

Users of the Town of Mono water systems are also reminded that Water Works Staff will continue to regularly flush fire hydrants in some areas on subsequent Wednesdays as part of an ongoing maintenance program.  Again, the water should be checked for discolouration before use on those days.

Your cooperation and understanding during the fire hydrant maintenance programs is appreciated.
